Sultanpur National Park
Sultanpur National Park In Haryana, India
Sultanpur National Park, located in the Gurugram district of Haryana, is a renowned bird sanctuary and an important wetland ecosystem in northern India. Covering an area of 1.43 square kilometers, it was originally declared a bird sanctuary in 1972 and later upgraded to a national park in 1991.
Despite its small size, Sultanpur is a paradise for birdwatchers, attracting over 250 species of resident and migratory birds throughout the year. The park’s landscape is dominated by a central lake, which serves as a crucial water source for birds and wildlife. Surrounding the lake are grasslands, dry deciduous trees, and marshy patches, creating an ideal habitat for various bird species.
During the winter months (October to March), the park hosts thousands of migratory birds from Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia, including greater flamingos, bar-headed geese, northern pintails, common teals, Eurasian wigeons, and black-necked storks. Resident birds such as Indian rollers, painted storks, black-winged stilts, purple herons, white-throated kingfishers, and spot-billed ducks can be seen year-round.
The park is also home to mammals like nilgai (blue bull), golden jackals, jungle cats, and wild boars, as well as reptiles such as monitor lizards and Indian cobras.Visitors can explore the park through well-maintained walking trails, watchtowers, and nature interpretation centers, providing excellent vantage points for birdwatching and photography.
