Pin Valley National Park
Pin Valley National Park In Himachal Pradesh, India
Pin Valley National Park, located in the cold desert region of Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, is a high-altitude wildlife sanctuary known for its stunning landscapes, unique biodiversity, and harsh yet mesmerizing terrain. Established in 1987, the park spans an area of 675 square kilometers, with an additional 1,150 square kilometers designated as a buffer zone.
It lies in the Himalayan trans-Himalayan region, making it one of the few cold desert national parks in India. The park is best known as a habitat for the elusive snow leopard, often referred to as the “Ghost of the Himalayas.” Other wildlife species found here include the Himalayan ibex, blue sheep (bharal), red fox, Tibetan wolf, Himalayan marmot, and lynx.
The park is also home to 20 species of mammals and over 70 species of birds, including the golden eagle, Himalayan griffon, bearded vulture, and snow partridge. Due to its cold desert climate, vegetation is sparse, but hardy plants like junipers, seabuckthorn, and dwarf rhododendrons thrive in the region. Pin Valley National Park is a trekker’s paradise, with trails offering breathtaking views of snow-clad peaks, deep gorges, and barren landscapes.
The Pin-Parvati Pass Trek and Bhabha Pass Trek are among the most popular routes, attracting adventure seekers looking to explore the rugged beauty of Spiti Valley. The monasteries of Kungri and Tabo, located near the park, add a cultural and spiritual dimension to the visit.
