Murlen National Park
Murlen National Park In Mizoram, India
Murlen National Park, located in the Champhai district of Mizoram, is a breathtaking wildlife sanctuary covering 100 square kilometers near the Indo-Myanmar border. Known for its dense forests, towering cliffs, caves, and pristine streams, Murlen is often compared to the Amazon Rainforest due to its rich biodiversity and dense canopy, which allows sunlight to penetrate only about 1% of the forest floor in some areas.
The park is home to over 150 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, and several rare reptiles and amphibians, making it a crucial conservation area in Northeast India. The park’s diverse terrain, with altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,800 meters, creates a variety of habitats that support endangered species like the clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, Malayan giant squirrel, and hoolock gibbon.
The forests of Murlen are dominated by oak, rhododendron, wild banana, and rare orchids, contributing to the park’s incredible floral diversity. Murlen is also steeped in local legends and folklore, with mystical caves like the Lamsial Puk and Hnahlan caves, which have historical significance among the Mizo people.
Adventure seekers can explore the rugged landscapes, deep valleys, and crystal-clear rivers while trekking through this untouched wilderness. The presence of rare bird species such as Hume’s pheasant, white-naped yuhina, and dark-rumped swift makes it a paradise for birdwatchers.
