Mukurthi National Park
Mukurthi National Park In Tamil Nadu,
India
Mukurthi National Park, located in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, is a unique protected area that forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its altitude varies between 1,500 and 2,629 meters, with Mukurthi Peak being one of the highest points in the region.
Covering an area of 78.46 square kilometers, it is one of the smallest national parks in India but is of immense ecological importance due to its role in conserving montane (high-altitude) ecosystems, especially the shola grassland habitat. Established in 1990, Mukurthi National Park is dedicated to protecting the endangered Nilgiri tahr, which is a rare mountain goat species found only in the Western Ghats.
The climate here is cool and misty throughout the year, making it one of the most pristine and unspoiled wildlife habitats in India. Mukurthi National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species, most notably the Nilgiri tahr, which thrives in the rugged cliffs and grassy slopes of the park. The park’s landscape is characterized by rolling grasslands interspersed with dense patches of shola forests, rocky cliffs, and high-altitude streams, creating a picturesque and biodiverse environment.
Other mammals found here include the Indian leopard, wild dog (dhole), sloth bear, sambar deer, barking deer, Nilgiri langur, and Malabar giant squirrel. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as the Nilgiri flycatcher, Nilgiri laughingthrush, black-and-orange flycatcher, and great Indian hornbill being commonly spotted.
Reptiles and amphibians, including pit vipers and endemic frogs, further contribute to the park’s rich biodiversity. Unlike other wildlife reserves that offer traditional jeep safaris, Mukurthi National Park is best explored through trekking trails and guided nature walks, making it a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Popular trekking routes lead to Mukurthi Peak and Mukurthi Lake, offering breathtaking views of the Nilgiri Hills and the Western Ghats.
