Mount Harriet National Park, located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, is a historically and ecologically significant protected area known for its dense tropical forests, rich biodiversity, and breathtaking landscapes. Spread across an area of approximately 46.62 square kilometers, it is situated in the South Andaman district, with Mount Harriet (now renamed Mount Manipur) as its highest peak, standing at 383 meters above sea level.
The park was established in 1979 and is one of the most accessible national parks in the Andaman Islands, located just 20 kilometers from Port Blair. This national park is famous for its diverse flora and fauna, with thick evergreen and semi-evergreen forests covering its rugged terrain.
It is home to several endemic and rare species, including the Andaman wild pig, Andaman hill myna, Andaman treepie, saltwater crocodiles, and various species of butterflies and reptiles. The park also provides habitat to over 90 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Additionally, the lush green landscape of the park was featured on the ₹20 Indian currency note, showcasing the scenic beauty of the Andaman Islands. The park offers stunning viewpoints, such as the Mount Harriet peak, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding islands, the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, and the nearby Ross and North Bay Islands.
Visitors can enjoy trekking, nature walks, and wildlife spotting, making it a popular destination for eco-tourism. The best time to visit is between November and March, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. To reach the park, visitors can take a ferry from Port Blair to Bambooflat, followed by a short road journey.
Among the most iconic aspects of Mount Harriet National Park is its historical significance, as it was once the summer headquarters of British officials during colonial rule. Now known as Mount Manipur National Park, it remains one of the most scenic and ecologically significant areas in the Andaman Islands, offering a blend of natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and historical relevance.
