Mathikettan Shola National Park, located in the Idukki district of Kerala, is a biodiversity hotspot in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an area of 12.82 square kilometers, it is one of Kerala’s smallest national parks but plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation and maintaining the ecological balance of the region.
The name “Mathikettan”, which means “mind-confuser” in Tamil, comes from local legends stating that people often lose their way in the dense forests. The park is known for its pristine shola forests, which are unique montane rainforests found only in the Western Ghats.It serves as a vital elephant corridor, connecting Periyar Tiger Reserve and Eravikulam National Park.
Apart from Indian elephants, Mathikettan Shola is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the Indian leopard, Malabar giant squirrel, sambar deer, barking deer, jungle cat, and Indian porcupine. It also boasts a rich avian population, with endemic birds like the Nilgiri pipit, Malabar parakeet, and white-bellied blue flycatcher. The park’s diverse flora includes rare medicinal plants, making it ecologically significant.
