Kanha Tiger Reserve
Kanha Tiger Reserve In Madhya Pradesh, India
Kanha Tiger Reserve, located in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most well-known and well-preserved wildlife sanctuaries, famous for its thriving population of Royal Bengal Tigers and lush, scenic landscapes. Spanning an area of 940 square kilometers, with an additional 1,067 square kilometers as a buffer zone, Kanha is the largest national park in central India and was declared a tiger reserve in 1973 under Project Tiger.
The park’s diverse terrain consists of dense sal and bamboo forests, vast meadows, and riverine ecosystems, providing a rich habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. One of Kanha’s most notable conservation successes is the revival of the hard ground barasingha, which was once on the brink of extinction but has now been successfully bred and reintroduced into the wild.
Apart from the majestic Bengal tiger, Kanha is also home to leopards, sloth bears, Indian wild dogs (dholes), barasingha (swamp deer), gaur (Indian bison), and more than 300 species of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
The park’s core zones—Kisli, Kanha, Mukki, and Sarhi—offer thrilling jeep safaris, allowing visitors to explore the breathtaking beauty of the reserve while spotting its incredible wildlife. The inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel “The Jungle Book“, Kanha’s picturesque landscapes, with rolling meadows and dense forests, truly bring to life the essence of Kipling’s descriptions.
Additionally, the park is known for its Bamni Dadar (Sunset Point), Shravan Tal, and numerous water bodies, which serve as important gathering spots for animals, offering excellent opportunities for photography and observation. With well-maintained eco-tourism facilities, knowledgeable guides, and responsible conservation practices, Kanha Tiger Reserve is a model for wildlife protection and sustainable tourism in India.
