Gugamal National Park In Maharashtra, India
Gugamal National Park, located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, is a vital part of the Melghat Tiger Reserve in the Satpura Range of central India. Established in 1974, Gugamal National Park in Maharashtra spans over 361 square kilometers and is known for its dense forests, hilly terrains, and rich biodiversity. As a prominent National Park in India, it is home to the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, sloth bear, sambar deer, and over 250 bird species, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers.
The Tapti River and its tributaries flow through the region, enhancing the park’s ecological diversity. As part of a Project Tiger reserve, Gugamal is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, along with other carnivores such as Indian leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), striped hyenas, and jungle cats. The park also shelters herbivores like sambar deer, chital (spotted deer), barking deer, nilgai, gaur (Indian bison), and four-horned antelope (chousingha).
The Indian giant squirrel, an iconic species of the Western and Central Indian forests, is also found here. Additionally, the park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 species of birds, including crested serpent eagles, Malabar pied hornbills, paradise flycatchers, and vultures.
The park’s landscape consists mainly of tropical dry deciduous forests, dominated by teak, bamboo, and other native trees, which support a rich ecosystem. Unlike more commercialized national parks, Gugamal offers a relatively untouched and raw wildlife experience, making it ideal for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
